December is marked by the beginning of winter and the longest nights of the year. The old sun dies or descends into madness, giving way to a season of misrule in which the hidden seed of its rebirth is already taking shape. This is one of the richest periods of the year in surviving traditions, both religious and secular: from Saint Lucy’s Day, which ushers in the Christmas season, to Saint Sylvester’s Eve, traditionally the most bewitched night of all in our lands.
